"In myths or legends... we get at the basic patterns of the human Psyche."
Marie-Louise von Franz, 1973
Marie-Louise von Franz, 1973
We all wonder what it really means to live a meaningful life and to be in relationship with the Self. Since the ancient Sumerians, we have searched for answers to questions such as: How do we learn to be parents? What do we teach our children and grandchildren about life? How do we find and sustain a great love for another, and for our inner life? Where do we go to find answers to questions that humanity has asked since the beginning of time?
While we each need to make our individual choices in life, it is our sacred texts, the mythological journeys of the Hero, fairytales and legends, as well as dreams, that allow us to see something of the archetypal nature of life that have been experienced, recorded, and lived by generations from time immemorial.
Here we learn that there is another voice that complements and extends our personal awareness about life. As the body follows the contours of life from birth to old age - all deeply etched into the body memory - Psyche too allows us to hear, see, and feel her messages written into our hearts and souls.
Dr. Rosaly Roffman, a gifted mythologist reminds us that, "mythology is the telling of humanities relationships to the Divine." Here, within these stories, we learn of these universal "basic patterns of the human Psyche" - the archetypal journey of life which silently continues to guide our journey.
As our parents and grandparents gently prepare us for bed, they read us fairy tales. We are enthralled and imagine that WE are living out these stories of kings and queens, of journeying to some far-off land, and meeting magical, talking animals. We are brought into the world Carl Jung referred to as "The Spirit of the Depths" where each adventure speaks to our hunger and search for soul. Each story illuminates that invisible path which leads to The Self. Here is a telling of time eternal, where the divine now speaks through these talking animals, whose voice and message is as real as that of our parents and divinities influencing our life.
Jung came to understand the Reality of the Psyche, through his encounters with the prophet Elijah who helped him to see that the inner and mythological world is as real as events in the outer world. This encounter with Elijah now stands as the foundational stone upon which Jungian Psychology rests.
This is the world of Psyche revealed to us through Fairy Tales. So as we are tucked in - kissed not only by our loved ones, but also by The Self - we know that the messages of the soul have found their way into our heart, and forever more will guide us to our unfolding destinies.
Marie Louise von Franz was impassioned by the profound meaning found in fairy tales. In working with more than 60,000 tales in her lifetime she learned that the Self speaks by way of stories, in images, and journeys which allows us to feel the rhythms and ways of The Self.
So too, in this course, students will learn the art, love, and the discipline of seeing the depths of meaning contained within these stories. The intention of this work is to strengthen and re-awaken our passion for these eternal stories, and remind us to - once again - turn our gaze to the eternal. While remembering that the world of imagination, of story and of The Psyche are far more grand than we may have even imagined.
Global Faculty
As Fairy Tales are truly universal and represent an essential part of every nation’s cultural and archetypal history, we have assembled a uniquely international faculty of Jungian Analysts, scholars, and lovers of myth and legend to speak to this reality.
This 7-month certification course in Fairy Tale Analysis is presented by The Assisi Institute’s Rozan Christian, Michael Conforti, Patricia Llosa, Bonnie Pfeiffer and Kevin Richard, as well as faculty from Latin America, Russia, South Africa, and Switzerland.
Opening Lecture
In addition, students have the rare privilege of learning from Dr. Hansueli Etter as Guest Presenter in this course. Dr. Etter, who is a Senior Jungian Analyst based in Switzerland and was a long-time colleague and personal friend of Marie-Louise von Franz, will present a very special opening lecture on Saturday, November 13.
