One cannot think of Jungian Psychology without acknowledging the profound contributions of the pioneering women in this field. From Marie-Louise von Franz, Emma Jung, and Esther Harding to Toni Wolff, Barbara Hannah, and Helen Luke, each had dedicated their life to an ongoing investigation into the workings of The Self, and the contents of the collective unconscious. From the expression of the creative unconscious in fairy tales, literature, film and dreams, each has encouraged us to live with an ever-deepening understanding of Psyche.
In this lecture series, we focus on the life and work of these gifted founding women of Jungian psychology and their profound contributions to the field. The talks for this year’s Founding Women Seminar will be given by Jungian Analysts; Elizabeth Colistra who will speak on the life and contributions of Barbara Hannah, and Brenda Crowther who will present Jung’s Vision Seminars on Christiana Morgan’s dreams and visions.
The Assisi Institute is offering this series to honor the life, work and discoveries of these two women, and to revisit with fresh eyes their brilliant and enduring contributions to this field. We hope that you join us in this honoring of their work, and the opportunity to learn even more about their contributions to our understanding of archetypes, the creative unconscious, and the enduring presence of feminine wisdom within the Psyche.

Barbara Hannah was an extraordinary woman and pioneering Jungian analyst who lived her life according to the principle of individuation and the archetype of wholeness. Miss Hannah went to Zurich at the age of 39 after reading C.G. Jung’s essay “Woman in Europe,” intent on beginning analysis with him. Jung initially sent her to work with notable analysts Toni Wolff, Emma Jung and Peter Baynes, before eventually settling on analyzing her himself. After becoming an analyst in her own right, Barbara Hannah began lecturing at The Psychological Club, the C. G. Jung Institute in Zurich, and abroad in the USA. She published several books related to the concepts of analytical psychology as well as “the only indispensable biography of Jung,” according to Jungian scholar, Sonu Shamdasani. Barbara Hannah never married nor had children but shared a home with Jungian analyst Marie-Louise von Franz for nearly twenty-five years. This presentation will explore the life and work of Barbara Hannah, specifically how her devotion to the unconscious and the process of wholeness led to a meaningfully lived life.

Christiana Morgan, born in Boston in 1897, was an American artist, writer and lay Jungian psychoanalyst. She was fascinated by depth psychology and in 1920 she became part of the Introvert/Extravert Club in New York City. From 1921 to 1924 she studied at the Art Students League of New York.
Jung’s ‘Visions Seminars’ analyze and comment on Morgan’s many dreams, visions, paintings and writings. Viewing her as a ‘femme inspiratrice’, these seminars address Morgan’s archetypal journey, her encounters with the depths of her psyche, and expression of her quest for psychological integration. Jung’s commentaries on this work are breath-taking in their understanding of the profundity of the feminine Psyche.
I will relate some of the visions and dreams of Christiana Morgan to certain experiences of her life - for she has a turbulent biography that ended in tragedy. It is not known if she committed suicide or drowned by accident. Perhaps her visions will help us towards the truth of what happened and also help us look into what it means, for a woman of flesh and blood, to be the embodiment of what Jung believed to be the “perfect feminine” - how such a psychic constitution affects a woman's life development.
