“The wound is the place where the Light enters you.”

The eruption of the Sacred into the world of matter is chronicled throughout history. Descriptions of breakthrough experiences in which numinous contents are manifested in the material realm are found across cultural myths and stories, religious traditions, and personal narratives.
Here we find events and moments not commonly experienced in this world, emerging to point the way towards a new orientation towards life, to determine a change of trajectory and most importantly to provide a much needed experience of the sacred.
Jung speaks of the miraculous as entering the sphere of the archetype, and explains that; “when the ego…is forced to admit defeat, when we surrender the ego will… agents that do not coincide with the conscious psyche can come to our aid, producing a miracle” (Jung, 1960).
Traumatic events and highly charged emotional situations are often the catalyst through which the Sacred may be directly encountered. This lecture will explore the phenomenon of breakthrough experience and the ways in which the dissolution of ego consciousness during episodes of traumatic stress can serve the purpose of opening the psyche to an encounter with the Self and soul, creating a window of opportunity to trigger the process of individuation.
