“Sooner or later something seems to call us onto a particular path.
You may remember this "something" as a signal moment in childhood when an urge out of nowhere, a fascination, a peculiar turn of events struck like an annunciation:
This is what I must do, this is what I've got to have. This is who I am."
- James Hillman, The Soul’s Code: In Search of Character and Calling -

About the Conference:
Plato once said that our destiny is written on a letter, descending on us from the heavens. However, as this comes ever closer to us, the words suddenly become invisible. He went on to use the words destiny and pattern interchangeably and - similar to Hillman, Jung, von Franz and others - suggests that an intimation of our destiny is contained in the patterns of our life. But if it were only so easy to discern the nature of this destiny!
Robert Louis Stevenson explained that, “In each of us, two natures are at war..." and perhaps we must acknowledge the presence of a destiny given by the Self, and an often troubled fated life of our complexes, which all too often take us from the life we are meant to live. To understand this “war within” makes all the difference between a life driven by fate and a life of destiny.
The need to understand this Self and to know what we are meant to be, is woven into human nature. This search has taken many forms throughout history. Following in the footsteps of the ancients and sages we continue to look towards the heavens and our dreams for an intimation of this destiny.
In literature, fairy tales, and cinema - and, yes, in our own life too - we often experience what is referred to as the false bride and false groom. In time, and upon reflection, we become painfully aware of the many losses resulting from our archetypal marriage to such a doomed coniunctio. Fortunately, however, the Self continues to provide the eternal possibility of hope, guiding us towards the life we are meant to live, regardless of past transgressions or age.
With an internationally acclaimed guest faculty of Jungian analysts, writers, artists and scholars this Conference will address ways to discern the difference between fate and destiny. So too we will consider how a fated life can be transformed into a profoundly meaningful destiny, and to understand the courage needed to accept the life that opens onto this path.
We hope that you will join us for this four-day hybrid event held in Stonington, Connecticut, one of the most beautiful coastal towns in America.

Maureen Kuehler - “Will Come to Know”: Shakespeare and the Role of Destiny
How does destiny reside within a body? Is destiny made more certain when announced by the phenomenal? Can it be altered? Destiny in Shakespeare can be playful, awe striking, and powerfully mundane - a witches’ prophecy can bring down a leader as surely as a knife stab. This talk will explore how Shakespeare weaves fate and embodiment, looking to works such as The Winter’s Tale, Henry IV, and Macbeth.

Paolo Quagliarella - The Power of Destiny, Mythology and Archetypal Astrology
"Astrology is the field that offers the best descriptions of character qualities. More than any other discipline, astrology provides us with the basis for a psychology of personality in which personality is conceived as a set of stable traits." (Hillman)
Astrology speaks of our future and destiny, and today, Archetypal Astrology as described by Richard Tarnas and others, is an art which enables us to read the potential patterns unfolding in an individual’s life. Jung, whose visionary work on the confluence of Psychology, archetypal dynamics and astrology, taught us to see that similar to an astrological birth chart, that the details of our life follow the contours of a pre-figured, archetypal pattern, guiding us towards a probable 'future’ or destiny.
Here we discover an intimation of our destiny, and a sense of what we are meant to do with our life, to prepare for this journey. In discussing the birth charts of well-known personalities, we will see how one is born into a field and destiny and how mythology and archetypal astrology enables us to understand specific contours and mandates of the archetypal fields orienting us to our life.

Eduardo Carvallo - The Soul’s Journey: Exploring Individuation through the Force of Destiny. A tour through the vision of Jung, Hillman, Von Franz, and Conforti
In this lecture we will delve into the fascinating world of Archetypal psychology and Jung’s work on Individuation(the process of becoming our true selves) through the lens of the force of destiny.
The force of destiny is the idea that our lives are guided by a higher calling, which is rooted in the deepest levels of our Psyche. Understanding and aligning ourselves with this force is seen as essential for achieving individuation and in becoming the person we are meant to be.
In this lecture, we will explore the ways in which the force of destiny shapes our lives and guides us on our soul's journey towards individuation. We will draw upon the ideas of Carl Jung, James Hillman, Marie-Louise von Franz, and Michael Conforti’s work on archetypal fields to deepen our understanding of this concept.
Through a combination of lecture, images and discussions, we will explore the ways in which the force of destiny manifests in our lives and how we can use this knowledge to deepen our understanding of ourselves and achieve greater fulfillment.

Michael Conforti - A Tale of Two Futures: The destiny offered by The Self and the Tragic Fated Life of a Complex
Throughout life we sail between two shores. One speaks to the contours of the life and destiny we are meant to live, while the other keeps us imprisoned within the confines of a fated life which constrains our spirit which hungers to find its path.
In this presentation Dr. Conforti will discuss the difference and relationship between these two shores of destiny and fate, including the symbols, behaviors, and relational dynamics of each, while illuminating ways to understand the nature of this journey. Through the presentation of clinical material and cinematic images, we will see how the generative and benevolent Self helps us to develop the courage and clarity to live into this innate destiny.
