“All projections are unconscious identifications with the object…From this enchainment he had to free the soul by means of the separation …” (Jung, Vol 14)
Since the beginning of time we have lived with the ongoing interplay between discernment and delusion, benevolence and malevolence and illusion and truth.  It is an essential part of the archetypal nature of life to live with these paradoxes which we also find captured in dreams. Our task is to see beyond the illusionary nature of many of our beliefs, so as to apprehend the innate wisdom of dreams, which convey a reality which far surpasses that of conscious deliberation.

In many mythic and biblical tales we find an arrogance/hubris whereby humanity sees themselves better than the Gods and no longer needing the intercession of the sacred. However this trait is still active in the contemporary Psyche, causing us to create beliefs which justify our way of life. This adoration of the subjective is what creates further estrangement from the Self and the soul. Instead we need to turn to what Marie Lousie von Franz termed; “Nature Constants”, to the innate wisdom of archetypes.

The alchemical process of “Separatio” offers redemption and freedom from the confines of seeing life through the lens of our own biases and projections. In dream work, it is imperative to discern the innate, archetypal (non-personal) meaning of images.  The alchemists referred to this as the “Separatio” which involves; “learn(ing) to discern between the parts of oneself that serve a higher purpose versus those that hinder spiritual growth…(which) is possible only if the delusory projections that veil the reality of things can be withdrawn.”

Taught by Dr Michael Conforti, and guest faculty Elizabeth Colista, this Winter Dream Conference continues our ongoing investigations into the relationship between archetypes, complexes and the process of “Separatio” in dream work.
Please note that our Dream Conference is open to both clinicians and those who have a personal interest in gaining deeper insight into the archetypal nature of their nighttime dreams.
