It is painfully obvious that we are living in troubled times, and experiencing first-hand the primitive, disruptive forces of Psyche now manifested in the world. Our sense of trust and peace now rests on shaky ground.
It is time for us to once again find those voices which speak about Psyche, soul, and who will help us understand the nature of these archetypal forces irrupting in the world. Since our inception in 1989, 37 years ago, The Assisi Conference has been a respite for many, a place where we have learned to trust these voices will be heard. Accompanied by friends and colleagues from around the world we feel a promise, an intimation of a wisdom emerging from beyond the veil of temporal reality. Here within the confines of two of the most beautiful and sacred places in the world, the beautiful Island of Elba in the Tuscan Archipelago, and the medieval village of Assisi, the birth place of St. Francis we feel the warm embrace of the "Genius loci" - the protective spirit of a place. In just a few months, we will be returning to Italy for what will be a time of learning and community, joined by voices from many of the world's most prominent Jungian Analysts, theologians and literary scholars.
I was still a young man when The Assisi Programs began. Those days of summer have faded, and now I watch with concern and fear the journey of my own grandchildren. Those of us who are now elders cannot afford the luxury of simply hoping for a better world and for tomorrow to bring greater calm and clarity. As Jung taught us, it is the reality of Psyche and the soul which holds the future for humanity, and it is here that we must place our stakes in the ground and listen and learn all that we can about the serpentine paths of Psychic life - and the Soul. As elders we do not take on this work for ourselves but for our grandchildren, the next generation who will inherit what we have made of this life. So too those who are younger can approach these studies with the vigor and endurance of youth, and perhaps make a path for us to follow. Together we can make a difference.
