“This knowledge is invaluable for an analyst. That’s why Jung said that studying fairy tales is a good way to study the comparative anatomy of the collective unconscious,
the deeper layers of the human psyche.”
- Marie-Louise von Franz, Archetypal Patterns in Fairy Tales (p. 21) -
An exploration of fairy tales has a particular value for psychotherapy, in that similar to the profound influence of dreams, fairy tales speaks of the perennial tasks we all encounter in life. It is through the presentation of archetypal images, stories and symbols that we learn of the ways of The Self and the Soul.
Carl Jung, Marie-Louise von Franz, and the pioneers in Jungian Psychology looked to fairytales and myths to represent the anatomy of the psyche. The profound wisdom contained in these stories regarding complexes, developmental processes, to the gift of allowing us to see an intimation of our true calling and destiny - continue to guide clinicians’ in their understanding of clients’ psychological needs and journey through life.
In "The Interpretation of Fairy Tales" we read that; “Fairy tales are the purest and simplest expression of the collective unconscious psychic processes. Therefore, their value for (an) investigation of the unconscious exceeds that of all other material. They represent the archetypes in their simplest, barest and most concise form.”
Fairy tales present a series of universal motifs, including: the father-daughter, mother-son relationships, losing our way in the journey from oppression to redemption, the power of the witch’s spell, and the gift of finally finding our way home, which has helped humanity find the way back to the soul.
In following the clinical path pioneered by von Franz, we will look to the images and motifs in these stories to learn about the language of Psyche, of healing, and the therapeutic process. From this, we are able to provide our clients a clinical experience that not only seeks to understand the ongoing effects of trauma, but facilitates their understanding of their relationship to the archetypal nature of their life
We hope that you will join us for this unique experience of studying the archetypal nature of fairy tales and how they inform and deepen our clinical work.
Please note: The Assisi Institute’s Beginning Fairy Tale, Advanced/Master Fairy Tale courses are strong precursors for participating in this Clinical course. However individuals who have not participated but believe they should start with this Clinical course are encouraged to register. [email protected]
